Cowboys/Eagles: Biggest Rivalry in the NFC East?

Some diehard Dallas Cowboys fans would say the biggest rival in the NFC East are the Washington Redskins.  That argument can be made thinking back to the old Tom Landry - George Allen fueds of the 70's.  Cowboy and Indians.  What could be better rivals than that?

But I beg to differ.  I say the "dreaded and feared" Eagles are the Cowboys top rival in the NFC East.  Eagles fans are proud and arrogant.  Just look at some of the threads started by Eagles fans, ie "All Cowboys Fans are Frauds".  That'll get the punches rolling between fans of the two teams. Cowboys fans, who will fight to the finish to defend their team, have threads like "What's it like to be an Eagles Fan"?

Here are a few delicious trips down memory lane tht helped fuel the Cowboys/Eagels rivalry history:

  • The 1980 NFC Championship game.  It was a hard pill to swallow for Cowboys fans and even though the Cowboys went to 3 straight NFC Championship games and lost, this was the hardest to take.
  • In 1987 Tom Landry plays vets Tony Dorsett and Randy White against the Eagles replacement team saying he just "played the hand he was dealt."  A few weeks later, Randall Cunningham fakes taking a knee and throws the winning TD.  Buddy Ryan says "hey, I just played the hand I was dealt."
  • The "Bounty Bowl" game in 1989.  Jimmy Johnson accuses Buddy Ryan of offering bounties to take out Cowboys players.
  • During the 1992 season the Eagles kill the Cowboys 31 -7 in the 1st game. Eagles are smitten but the Cowboys win the next game, beat the Eagles in the playoffs and win the Superbowl.
  • The "No ! Barry No!" game when Barry Switzer went for it on 4th and 1.  The Cowboys lost the game but did win the Superbowl that year.
  • Monday Night, Sept. 1997 game when the Eagles snapper couldn't get the ball down for Chris Boniol to kick the winning field goal with 4 seconds left.  Eagles lost a game they should have won.
  • Who can forget how Eagles fans cheered and jeered as Michael Irvin lay motionless and helpless in Veteran Stadium during the 1999 season?
  • The infamous "pickle juice" game on when the Eagles obliterated the Cowboys in the heat in Texas Stadium during the 2000 season.

The Cowboys and Eagles have played 97 games in 48 years.  The Cowboys lead the series 54 - 43.  I'm sure there will be many, many more games that will forever seal the Cowboys/Eagles as one of the greatest rivalries of all time.

The T.O. Blow-up: Just a myth in Dallas

Well fellow football fans, here we are looking at Terrell Owens 3rd season in Dallas.  Wow, if you had read all the hype a couple of years ago, T.O. wouldn't be here 1year, much less 3.  What happened to the guaranteed prediction of a T.O. blow-up in Dallas?  It was just going to be a couple of months, right?  He wasn't going to like Drew Bledsoe, and if they put an unknown guy named Tony Romo in as QB, he would surely be unhappy and blow-up.  Didn't happen.  I'm not surprised.  There are several reasons for this in my mind:

1.  T.O. had matured greatly since coming here from the fiasco he caused in Philly.

2.  T.O. and the owner Jerry Jones have a good, solid working relationship.

3.  T.O. realized in that Giants game 2 seasons ago just how great Tony Romo was going to be.

and lastly,

4. T.O. loves being a Dallas Cowboy!

There are players from other teams I'm sure that would love to play for the Dallas Cowboys but know they cannot, therefore turning their jealosy into hatred (ie when T.O. was with the 49ers and Eagles).  T.O. is genuinely happy here and I see him retiring as a Dalls Cowboy!

The T.O. blowup is just a myth here in Dallas!

Dallas evades the Dawg Pound!!

Well, I should have made a huge bet on the Cleveland game.  What were' the oddsmakers thinking?  4.5 points??  I had it pegged pretty well.  I predicted the score to be 35 -17 an 18 point spread.  The final score: 28 -10, an 18 point spread.

The Cowboys played an almost perfect game.  I said almost.  There are still too many penalties.  I believe 11 for about 80 yards.  Of course we Cowboys fans knew the season had started when Flozell Adams had his obigatory offside penalty! Too many holding penalties, 2 in one drive alone!  T.O.'s penalty for taunting was a litlle on the rediculous side if you ask me.  Is there no fun at all allowed in pro football?

Tony Romo was pretty smooth.  Except for the interception in the endzone, but I have to give him some slack since Felix Jones did miss his block on that play.  Oh well, he's a rookie.  He needs to learn blocking from Marian Barber.  Did you see the block he picked up when Romo through the TD to TO?  Wow.  Kuddos to th O-line!!  Romo stood back there all day just waiting for someone/anyone to get open.

Whitten and TO both played well as expected.  Barber was on his way to 100 yards until he had to leave in the 3rd quarter.  Jones and Choice did great as his replacements.  Crayton and Stanbeck both made contributions.

Special teams need to tighten up the kickoff/punt return coverage.  Cleveland had a few drives starting past their own 30.  Extra points were all that Nick Folk got to kick, but that's a good thing right?

I think the defense was excellent.  205 total yards from a somewhat high powered Cleveland offense?  Can't get any better than that in my mind.  PacMan is still a little rusty, but played pretty well overall.

Pretty good start to the season.  Cowboys needed to come out and make a statement and they did.  Now let's see how they do against the dreaded and feared Eagles!!

Here we are!!

Wow...The NFL season has begun!!  I've been waiting for this ever since I found myself sitting in my seat in Texas Stadium staring at the scoreboard after the playoff loss to the New York Football Giants.  Time for the Cowboys to avenge themselves for the last two playoff games.  Sunday cannot get here fast enough.  Starting the season in Cleveland is a great way for the Cowboys to show the rest of the league they mean business.  Cleveland was a surprise team last year with a high scoring offense.  The Cowboys will win big in my opinion.  13-3 last season was not a fluke.  This year, they have the best team on paper and need to prove it on the field.  What better way to start than to quiet the loud barking from the Dawg pound!!  My prediction: Cowboys 35 Cleveland 17.
